"Wild" Bill Billing's Journey to Regenerative Nutrition and the Purest Protein on the Planet

If you’ve ever met Bill Billings, better known as Wild Bill, you know he’s a man who’s spent his life building things that last—from homes that capture the sun to crops that heal the earth. His journey toward creating the purest protein on the planet began after serving in the U.S. Coast Guard during the Vietnam era. When he returned home, Bill wasn’t looking for just another career—he was searching for purpose.

That purpose first took shape in construction. As a carpenter with a head full of ideas and a heart for sustainability, Bill helped pioneer solar design and energy conservation in the 1970s. He even helped build Denver’s first self-sufficient solar home, drawing inspiration from the enduring designs of the ancient Anasazi of Mesa Verde—a home that still stands today as a tribute to ingenuity and resilience.

Then, as the construction industry slowed, Bill’s path turned toward the land. Working in farming and produce logistics, he realized his true calling lay in the soil itself. In 2014, Bill and his daughter launched the Colorado Hemp Project, igniting what would become the modern hemp revolution. Huge thanks to Jim Brammer, who gave them a shot when nobody else would—the first legal hemp harvest in the U.S. since prohibition grew on his land in Sterling, Colorado. Shortly after, they expanded to fields near Chimney Rock outside Pagosa Springs, sacred ground where the Puebloan Tribes once planted corn. For Bill, it was more than farming—it was a spiritual return to the roots of agriculture itself.

His daughter Dani went on to co-found Nature’s Root and Better Aromatherapy, while his son Beau bred award-winning CBD genetics—proof that the Billings family’s dedication to hemp’s potential runs deep.

Today, Bill’s journey has come full circle. Partnering with one of the finest men he’s ever met—and longtime friend—Roger Gussiaas of Healthy Oilseeds, he’s helping lead a new agricultural movement with the creation of the world’s first Regenerative Organic Certified™ hemp protein powder. Together, they’re also crafting a full line of regenerative organic and USDA organic certified hemp and flaxseed products—pure oils, creamy butters, and nutrient-rich powders designed to nourish people and the planet alike.

Roger Gussiaas – President & Owner, Healthy Oilseeds

Roger Gussiaas has farming in his DNA and innovation in his heart. From his roots in Carrington, North Dakota, Roger founded Healthy Oilseeds in 2002 with a bold mission: to bring premium, sustainably produced oilseeds to customers across the globe. Today, that vision thrives in a company known for processing specialty flaxseed, hempseed, and borage through cold-press expelling, milling, and sifting — providing the building blocks for nutritious, natural products that reach 25 countries and 49 U.S. states.

Before launching Healthy Oilseeds, Roger was already a seasoned farmer. Since starting his agricultural journey in 1979, he’s cultivated more than 5,000 acres and grown 24 different crops, including hempseed for grain and CBD. His deep, hands-on knowledge—from soil to export logistics—makes him a trusted voice in sustainable agriculture and oilseed innovation.

Roger’s leadership extends well beyond his own fields. He has served on boards such as the North Dakota Grain Growers, American Renewable Oil Association, and the North Dakota District Export Council. His lifelong dedication and forward-thinking approach have earned him major honors, including National Outstanding Young Farmer, North Dakota Exporter of the Year, and the Legacy Award of Excellence at the 2024 NoCo Hemp Conference.

Never one to rest on his success, Roger has teamed up with longtime friend and fellow ag visionary Bill Billings (“Wild Bill”) to launch a groundbreaking new venture: a direct-to-consumer line featuring the world’s first Regenerative Organic Certified™ hemp protein powder—along with a collection of regenerative organic and USDA organic certified hemp and flaxseed products, including nutrient-dense oils, protein powders, and butters. This new chapter builds on decades of expertise while championing the future of regenerative agriculture and healthy living.

A graduate of Mayville State University and Texas A&M’s Executive Program for Agricultural Producers, Roger remains dedicated to sharing his knowledge and excitement for sustainable farming, hemp and flax innovation, and global ag entrepreneurship. Whether in the field, behind a press, or collaborating on new ideas, Roger brings endless curiosity, integrity, and passion to everything he grows and builds.
